Fuller’s Earth Clay is a naturally occurring, fine-grained mineral clay valued for its high natural adsorption capacity, oil-absorbing properties and ability to bind impurities, pigments and other substances to its mineral surface. it is primarily valued as a natural mineral absorbent, cleansing and oil-control ingredient. Its porous and finely divided mineral structure enables it to adsorb excess sebum, oils and other surface impurities. It is therefore particularly suitable for formulations developed for oily, combination or congested skin, as well as products where oil absorption and a refined clay texture are desired. Cosmetic ingredient references identify Fuller’s Earth with functions including absorbent, abrasive, bulking, opacifying and anticaking functions, depending on the formulation and grade.

The term “Fuller’s Earth” describes a class of naturally occurring absorbent clays rather than one single chemically defined mineral, and its precise mineralogical composition can vary according to its geological source. Depending on the deposit, Fuller’s Earth may contain significant proportions of minerals such as montmorillonite, kaolinite, palygorskite (attapulgite), sepiolite and other clay minerals, together with naturally occurring mineral constituents such as silica, aluminium, magnesium, calcium, iron, sodium and potassium. This variable mineral composition is responsible for differences in its colour, texture, particle size, adsorption capacity and other physical properties from one source to another.
